Porém, assinala que se os proprietários e gestores souberem escolher bem como aplicar os reduzidos recursos, então poderão fazer a diferença em seu produto final.
Para Meyer, entre as estratégias inteligentes para a sobrevivência dos jornais está a publicação de versões com análises e reportagens investigativas, com reforço na comunidade de leitores local. Ele adverte:

– Newspapers might have a chance if they can meet that need by holding on to the kind of content that gives them their natural community influence. To keep the resources for doing that, they will have to jettison the frivolous items in the content buffet.

Phiplip Meyer é Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, autor de livros como The Vanishing Newspaper: Saving Journalism in the Information Age (2004) , no qual prevê o desaparecimento dos jornais no ano 2043.
