Um podcast da revista feminina Marie Claire, em sua versão norte-americana, levantou polêmica quanto à inserção de referências diretas a produtos comerciais em espaços editoriais da revista. A revista vem usando seu podcast (The Masthead With Marie Claire) para, em meio a material editorial, anunciar produtos e serviços.
Marie Claire se defende alegando que as normas da ASME (American Society of Magazine Editors) não se aplicam a podcasts. No que é contraditada por Marlene Kahan, diretora executiva da ASME, que informa que pelos padrões vigentes, as normas de separação entre material editorial e publicitário se aplicam a todos os formatos digitais:
“All online pages should clearly distinguish between editorial and advertising or sponsored content. A magazine’s name or logo should not be used in a way that suggests editorial endorsement of an advertiser. The site’s sponsorship policies should be clearly noted, either in text accompanying the article or on a disclosure page, to clarify that the sponsor had no input regarding the content.”
